This is the second time Simon Shaw has exhibited in the Box Gallery…. the first being around 12 years ago.
Comparatively there are less thrown pieces in this collection and more hand built/composite pieces.
This has enabled Simon to explore a greater variety of form and texture in his work, whilst still using a coarse crank stoneware clay.
The distinctive glazes used in Simon’s work have been developed over 30 years and are high in Barium and Copper Carbonates giving a textured, matt finish and a colour palette of blues, greens and lilacs. There are also additions of glass, metal, wood and wire in some of the work.
Simon studied at the Wirral College of Art and Design and Braintree College in Essex. After working abroad for several years, he returned to his native Merseyside where he established his own workshop in 1997. Simon’s ceramics can be seen in up to 30 galleries in the UK, including Liverpool’s Bluecoat Display Centre.
