The garden gallery opened in April 2000 with the aid of an award from Arts & Business. We were able to commission three artists to create work especially for the project: Derbyshire-based sculptor Miles Halpin has provided the set of three rusted steel orbs as well as the panel of hieroglyphs above the entrance door. Richard Bett who hails from Lincoln created railings and seats based on artefacts from the former rope factory. Artist Coralie Turpin who is based at the Yorkshire Artspace in Sheffield worked alongside children from Barton’s primary schools and created the panel of floor mosaics from natural materials. The scheme of the garden and planting was the work of Hull designer Sue Hamnett who made use of the found materials of the former factory.
