During September the Box Gallery will be filled with a collection of handmade leather bags, made by Jon and Judy Homer of Lincolnshire. Jon, by trade is a saddle fitter and bridle maker. His passion for making custom bags grew out of having remnants of leather left over in the workshop.
Over the last couple of years he has been lucky enough to expand this part of the business to enable Judy to work alongside him full time in this area offering demonstrations in traditional saddle stitching techniques and taking the work to specialist markets and events.
Jon and Judy hand cut, dye and finish natural hides, with many designs hand sewn in saddle stitch or by using their 1960’s Adler sewing machine.
Great pride and care is taken in selecting quality leathers and honing the designs to enhance and celebrate the wonderful and very workable qualities of beautiful leather.
The bags are created by using repurposed vintage printing plates to permanently emboss the designs into wet unfinished hides. After drying they are then hand painted using acrylic leather dyes before the hide is finished with several layers of their own mixed tannery dye. They are then repainted to highlight areas and sealed with a generous coat of home made beeswax and caranauba wax. A final few hours for drying and then polishing leaves the leather ready to be cut to shape and stitched up, a process which can take up to three days.
Inprint is an open entry by selection national printmaking biennale celebrating contemporary creative printmaking. This year the exhibition is shared across three galleries – The Ropewalk in Barton upon Humber, Eleven and KAG in Humber St. Hull.
The exhibition represents a diverse range of approaches and techniques from printmakers across the UK with work made via etching, solar plate processes, woodblock and lino-cut, collagraph and screenprint. The prints made include decorative, illustrative, observational, and fine art based content with subject matter from the mundane to the fanciful.
The exhibition includes an invited submission of twelve prints from the eminent Edinburgh Printmakers workshop including work by Alan Davie and John Bellany, and from the open entry several works by local printmakers. All the works are for sale.
Four prizes for excellence were awarded by the selectors including two Inprint awards, The Roland Box prize and the Hawthorne materials award. The selectors deliberated hard to separate these prints from the many beautiful works on show in the three galleries.
Anthony Housman makes paintings that contain motifs and biomorphic shapes which take their cue from a diverse range of starting points, including recreational, re-enacted and domestic sources. His paintings are usually begun with what he calls an “activation of the canvas” – a flurry of diluted, painterly gestures, from which he looks to assimilate apparitions of space, by introducing increasingly systematized forms and solid swathes of colour. His approach to painting aims at developing a constant dialogue between the intentional and the incidental. Many of his paintings contain additional collage elements including canvas off-cuts and palette residue, added to further expose the materiality of the painting process.
