If anyone missed York-based ceramacist Chiu-i Wu’s recent exhibition in the Box Gallery you might be relieved to know that we have retained some of her work and it is now on display in the Hall Mark Room.

Collection: Gill Hobson

By richardhatfield |

At the heart of Gills’ work is a ringing consistency of ideas: of time, place, space and light and how to unify them to create works which speak to our contemporary world and ways of living.

Gill combines techniques and materials, constructing many separate elements to create cohesive wholes, constantly seeking new arrangements and forms which capture the particular qualities of her medium. Influenced by her work with architectural space, recent works play with ideas of light and time, referencing the rhythms and patterns of nature.

In natural light, each work evolves over time to reveal a subtle yet constantly changing picture plane, whilst directional light brings new drama – life and movement over time become integral to each piece.

Creating artworks of elegant simplicity which re-establish connections with the rhythms of the everyday, each artwork is a unique celebration of colour, pattern and form through light.

20:20 Print Exchange

By richardhatfield |

The 20:20 Print Exchange is a project open to members of Print Workshops from throughout the UK. It started in 2009 as a venture between Hot Bed Press in Salford and Red Hot Press in Southampton. In 2010 it expanded to include 120 artists from 10 print workshops, in 2011 there were 257 artists from 19 print studios and the 2012 project includes 30 workshops and 392 participating printmakers.

Each artist is asked to produce a new edition of 25 prints on paper sized 20cm x 20cm. In return each artist receives a boxed set of 20 randomly selected prints, (including their own print and 19 others). Prints can be in any print medium. Each workshop also receives one set of randomly selected prints and one ‘twinned’ set whereby workshops are matched with another print workshop.

2012 is the first year that the Ropewalk Printmakers have taken part in the project with ten participating printmakers. This exhibition shows all of these prints alongside ten prints from our ‘twinning partner workshop’, The West Yorkshire Print Workshop in Mirfield and ten randomly selected prints.
