June 18 – July 17 Helen Martino EXTENDED UNTIL 1 AUGUST

Elegant, sophisticated, stylish ceramics from one of the UK’s foremost makers. Helen’s work is a contemporary take on the traditional figurine.

I make ceramic sculptures which embody a sense of narrative. Each piece within a series explores an element of the story through a change in scale, movement, composition or colour.

I am fascinated by body language within both the moving and still image.  I find inspiration, for example, in the exaggerated and stylised movements expressed by actors in silent movies - but equally interesting to me is the way in which narrative is depicted within Mogul and Persian miniature paintings. Here, a still gesture, combined with often intricate and symbolic composition, captures a moment which tells both a past and a future story.

My sculptures, often intimate in size, attempt to embody this moment. My intention though is to imply the greater narrative we can each create in our own minds when viewing the work.

For me it is not just the form of the sculpture that matters but also its surface. Here there is the chance to build up layer on layer of texture, pattern and colour that gives each piece its individual character, mood and story.

March 20 – April 18 Jake and Dinos Chapman: My Giant Colouring Book

MY GIANT COLOURING BOOKA Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London on behalf of Arts Council England

The etchings in My Giant Colouring Book, published by The Paragon Press in 2004, continue the Chapman brothers’ practice of taking existing imagery as a point of departure for their own fantasies, as they had done previously with Goya’s Disasters of War. Nineteen of the twenty-one images are based loosely on join-the-dots drawings from children’s picture books, which were copied through photo-etching on to copper plates. These have triggered surrealistic interventions – improvised monstrous creatures, fantastic landscapes and macabre incidents – which deviate wildly from the prescribed dot-to-dot formation. Dinos has said that these ‘are about how wrong you could make an image. How you could use nodal points and ignore them at the same time’.
