Ellie Collins Ellie's paintings are intuitive abstract compositions. She paints spontaneously, never conclusively planning an image beforehand. The artist is most at home performing on a large scale in order to employ pure gestural elements within the work. "Paint is the only medium I find flexible enough to be sufficiently responsive to the impulsive and expressive nature of my creativity. I am very happy painting." Ellie uses a diverse range of painterly techniques to achieve the resulting product… a compositional balancing act of energetic fluidity, spatial division and sub-division. Upon closer inspection of the paintings, the viewer is rewarded with subtle plays on surface quality, unorthodox placement of small motifs and the opportunity to glimpse through the various layers of the work that reveal it’s origins and history. Themes within the work include compositional and surface
manipulation, conscious ineptitude, triviality and humour. |
